Social Topics

Take a stance on a social issue that affects your community, such as:

Remember that you can argue for or against a particular topic, or write an essay about a sub-topic. For example, you could specifically discuss censorship on television, in music or in school. Whichever topic you choose, ensure that you have enough supporting evidence to create a persuasive essay.

Political Topics

Politics can be a divisive issue; however, there are also plenty of very interesting political topics that make great persuasive essays. For example:

  • The role of government
  • War / war crimes
  • Elections
  • Political parties

Controversial Topics

Tread carefully if you choose to write about a controversial topic; while you can find a plethora of information on these topics, you must take care to present a factual argument, using reliable, impartial sources for support.

  • Religion
  • Gay rights
  • Abortion
  • Gun control
  • Immigration

Some schools do not allow students to write about controversial topics, either because they are too popular or because they tend to be written emotionally. Check with your teacher before choosing a controversial topic.
